The Monarch High School Latinos in Action in Coconut Creek are making a positive difference in their school and the surrounding community.
On Monday and Tuesday mornings, 40 Latinos in Action members visit Liberty Elementary School in Margate to mentor and tutor students. On a recent Tuesday morning, the Monarch students were seen engaging the children in interactive reading exercises, a part of their regular tutoring sessions.
“Our main focus is on developing leadership skills and promoting the Hispanic community at our school. We encourage each other and work on service projects together,” said Kaira Guevara, 18, a senior and a vice president.
Marcela Xavier, 18, a senior, is the club’s historian. A resident of Coconut Creek, she has a 4.3 GPA. “We come to Liberty and help the children with their academic work. We want to help them as much as possible,” she said.
According to Rachel Robuste, Liberty’s community liaison who coordinates the Latinos in Action visits, the volunteers are very friendly and helpful to the elementary school students.
