For a third straight season, the Monarch High School softball team competed in the District Championship following the Knights’ 12-5 win over Coral Glades High School on Thursday.

Mackenzie Foster had a historic day in the semifinals with a home run and two RBIs. Mia Macaione drove in two runs while Samantha Rice and Faith Linderman had sacrifice flys. Isabella Castelli pitched a complete game allowing only one earned run. Despite walking six, she struck out five to record the win.

However, Monarch fell to Marjory Stoneman Douglas 2-1 in the Championship Game despite a tremendous performance from Castelli.  The senior did not allow an earned run in six innings while Emersyn Clark recorded an RBI. Cierra Taylor recorded two hits and a walk, while Mia Machine had the Knights’ other hit.

“It was a tough loss but we will take away the positives from the game and we learn from the negatives,” said Head Coach Kenny Forbes. “When we win, we win as a team. When we lose we lose as a team. We will practice Monday through Wednesday and be prepared for our next game.”

These two teams are set to play again in Regionals on Thursday, May 12. The Eagles come in as the three seed and will host while Monarch is the sixth seed.
