Monarch Athletics in Full Swing With Basketball and Soccer

Monarch High School continues its remarkable run with four teams all in action this week.

The boys basketball team won in their first game 52-51 against McArthur High School to move to 1-0 for the first time since the 2019-20 season. 

Their team comprises Sanjay Dhanraj, Jerome Blangor, Maxwell Young, Brandon Lynn, Kensey Bewley, Tristan Philogene, Jamir Davis, Cody Dinnall, Kayden Williams and Nikyle Campbell.

The Knights went 5-15 last season and will play Everglades High School in their next game on Thursday, November 30 at 7:30 p.m. The Gators are 1-1 this season, defeating King High School but losing to St. Petersburg after going 3-20 last year.  

The girls basketball team fell 86-26 to McArthur High School in their first game. They went 13-8 last season and will play Deerfield Beach High School in their next game on Wednesday, December 6 at 6 p.m. The Bucks are coming off a season where they went 8-13 and opened their season against West Broward High School. 

The boys soccer team had their first game in two weeks and beat Western High School to move to 3-1-1 this year. Ruddy Augusto scored the lone goal in the game. Monarch previously beat Deerfield Beach and Pompano Beach and had their only loss coming against South Plantation High School. They beat Coconut Creek High School 3-1 on Wednesday for their fourth victory, with Jack Steinbruckner, Agusto, and Tony Dos Santos all scoring.

The girls soccer team lost against 7-1 Western High School and fell to 1-3 on the season. Their only win came against Deerfield Beach High School in their opening game, and they have now lost three straight against Pompano Beach, South Plantation, and Western High School, but beat Coconut Creek High School School 8-0 on Wednesday, Kerstin Iadarola and Natalie Abri scored three goals and recorded two assists. Kaitlyn Dean and Isabella Gongora combined for two goals and three assists, while Sara Hernandez also had a helper.

Next, both soccer teams will play Marjory Stoneman Douglas, starting with the girls at 4:30 p.m., followed by the boys at 6 p.m. The boys soccer team is 4-1 this year and beat MSD three times last year, including twice in the postseason, while the girls team is 3-1.
