Progress is being made on the Margate City Center. During the March meeting, the board voted 5-0 to enter negotiations with Brookfield Properties.
The project will involve a mixed-use development on 50 acres known as the city center at the intersection of Margate Boulevard and State Road 7. All the city commission members have said that the future of Margate depends on the project’s success.
According to board chair Anthony Caggiano, Brookfield is large enough to self-finance the project, and they will use Margate as a showplace for what they can build.
“They will put their flag in the ground in Margate and show the region what they can do. I have seen their work in two Washington D.C. locations and one in Manhattan, and I was impressed,” said Caggiano.
Board member Arlene Schwartz said the city center is now a blank canvas, and the city will work on it.
The next step is for the CRA and the representatives from Brookfield to conduct workshops and citizen engagements and determine what Margate residents want from the city center. Board members have said they expect the project to include residential, retail, and restaurant spaces.
“We are hoping to build a downtown Margate that people drive to and not through,” said Caggiano.
