Margate is receiving funding from the budget that Governor Ron DeSantis signed into law.
During the July 1 commission meeting, Florida Representative Christine Hunschofsky and Senator Tina Polsky presented a $350,000 check to the city.
This money will be used to support stormwater infrastructure improvements throughout Margate to reduce flood risks and improve drainage. The project will help protect homes, businesses, and the environment while improving the reliability of the city’s stormwater system. The $350,000 came from the $3.001 million that Hunschofsky sponsored in local appropriations for District 95 and Broward County projects, according to a statement from Hunschofsky.
Both Polsky and Hunschofsky provided updates on the recent legislative session. Polsky encouraged residents to educate themselves about the amendment to reduce property taxes on homesteaded properties. She said there are problems with the current home property tax system. The amendment that will appear on the November ballot was not researched enough and will likely harm many cities if approved.
Polsky said that residents depend on city services such as police, fire rescue, roads, water, and parks and recreation. She encouraged people to study the amendment carefully and consider the possible consequences before voting.
