Margate Police Department is accepting applications for certified and non-certified police officers who want to serve the community.

According to Major Major Alain Banatte, the basic qualifications for candidates include being at least 21 years old, having a high school diploma, a valid Florida Driver’s License, and no misdemeanors or felony convictions. Margate accepts certified applicants and pays for non-certified applicants to attend the police academy.

The starting salary for a certified officer is $60,863-$94,351, with a $7,500 sign-on bonus and $51,000 for a non-certified officer.

Before applying, applicants must complete the Criminal Justice Basic Abilities Test administered by the Institute of Public Safety at Broward College. The score is valid for four years. They must also complete a swim and physical agility test, according to Banatte.

“We are looking for candidates who have a calling to serve their community while working with a great team. We want enthusiastic individuals with integrity and a positive attitude. Margate PD is a family, and we want people promoting that culture,” said Banatte.

Margate officers receive an array of benefits. They receive shift differential pay of up to $1,920 annually, a $1,210 yearly uniform allowance, and assignment pay of up to $2,000 annually. Officers also receive a take-home vehicle, 120 hours of holiday compensatory leave, 40 hours of administrative leave, and 96 hours of sick leave annually, according to Banatte.

Officers serve on a rotating schedule with four days on and four days off. They work 11.5 hours each day and receive overtime pay at time and a half if they work over their scheduled hours.

Banatte said they can participate in the Florida Retirement System and have pension and investment options. They can also participate in the Deferred Retirement Option Program (D.R.O.P), receive college tuition reimbursement, and take paid parental leave.

The Margate Police Department is a fully accredited law enforcement agency with 147 employees, including sworn officers and civilian personnel.
