A man was arrested after a domestic dispute turned violent after attacking his victim and threatening her and her children with a gun.
Teshon Cartwright, 39, of Miramar, was arrested on Jan. 8. According to Margate Police, Cartwright was staying with the victim and her children at their apartment on the 5700 block of Lakeside Dr.
At approximately 2:45 a.m., Cartwright and the victim argued over his smoking inside the apartment. The victim told Cartwright to pack his things and leave, but he instead became violent, hitting her in the face multiple times with a closed fist, according to the police report.
One of the children who attempted to intervene was pushed back by Cartwright. The child retreated to her bedroom, but Cartwright kicked the door off its hinges. The victim reported that Cartwright pulled one of the children out of the doorway while holding a small black handgun.
According to police, the victim became increasingly scared for her safety and the safety of her children and called 911.
According to the police report, Cartwright screamed at her to hang up the phone. “You called the police? I am going to kill all of us tonight.”
Cartwright blocked the exit, waving the firearm around. He even asked the victim to call her mother to say goodbye.
The victim managed to escape to the bathroom, but Cartwright kicked the door and demanded her car keys. He then discharged the firearm twice before leaving the apartment with the keys.
When police arrived, they began searching for Cartwright, who was found hiding under a dock located on a nearby lake. Cartwright refused to comply with officers’ commands and stood in the water for over an hour. He was eventually taken into custody by the Margate Police marine unit and Special Response Team.
The victim reported that she was scared for her life and the safety of her children. She was visibly shaken and provided a statement to the police.
Cartwright has been charged with domestic violence, assault, and weapons offenses. Police further confirmed two active warrants out of Broward County. The first warrant is for lewd/lascivious with a victim, 16, and the second is for felony violation of pre-trial release.
He is currently being held at Broward County Main Jail with no bond.
