Students at Liberty Elementary School in Margate are learning to understand and accept autistic classmates.

Erika Valbuena, Liberty’s autism coach, has organized lessons to teach students about autism and the many very successful people who have overcome this condition.

She was recognized as a Teacher of the Month at the April 3 Margate Commission meeting for her work with students who face autism and mentoring teachers who work with these students to help them become successful in school.

“I want the students to know it is not a bad thing to have autism. In fact, many prominent people use this condition as a gift. Many people with autism learn visually and can see things in a way that others cannot,” said Valbuena, highlighting the unique strengths and perspectives that individuals with autism bring.

Valbuena aims to educate students about autism and its effects on sensory processing. The students will learn about the condition, how to foster friendships and social interactions with classmates who have it, and how to empathize with individuals with it. The program will equip students with the knowledge and skills to provide support to individuals with autism.

“They can be compassionate, understanding, and accepting. Today’s students will become our future leaders,” said Valbuena.

On April 23, Liberty Elementary will host a special event, ‘Light It Up Blue,’ to spread Autism Awareness. The event is designed to bring the school community together and highlight the growing need for concern and awareness about this devasting disorder that affects one in 36 individuals.
