Florida Power & Light Company is expanding its scholarship program for high school seniors interested in STEM careers, adding a third award and broadening opportunities for students involved in robotics and drone programs.
FPL will now offer two $20,000 scholarships for students who participated in FIRST, VEX, or B.E.S.T robotics programs, along with a new $5,000 scholarship for a student involved in Drones in School.
“We’re thrilled to expand our scholarship programs for eligible high school seniors,” said Kate Cotner, FPL director of community engagement. “Robotics and drones offer fantastic opportunities for students to build critical skills in problem-solving, teamwork, and innovation.”
The scholarships are open to public and private high school seniors across FPL’s service area and are designed to support students pursuing higher education in STEM-related fields.
Applicants for the robotics scholarships must have at least two years of participation in an eligible program, a minimum 3.0 weighted GPA, and plans to enroll full-time in a STEM-related degree program. Students must also provide a recommendation from a robotics coach or teacher.
The Drones in School scholarship requires at least two years of program participation and plans to pursue postsecondary education in aviation, trade or technical fields. A recommendation from a program instructor is required, but there is no minimum GPA.
Umair Kazi, the 2025 recipient of FPL’s Robotics Scholarship, said the award helped him attend Georgia Tech.
“This scholarship was extremely beneficial for both myself and my family,” Kazi said. “I’m very grateful.”
Applications are open now and will be accepted through April 13, 2026. Students can apply at FPL.com/Education under STEM Grants and Scholarships.
