For Omar and Deborah Correa, opening a business has been a dream.
The dream came true in May when the Correas opened the El Coqui Bakery at 6209 Margate Boulevard in what is now Ace Plaza. On June 19, they celebrated the grand opening with a ribbon cutting, which included members of the city commission, friends, and family.
“We have lived in Margate for nine years, and Deborah has been selling cakes from our home. She wanted a bakery business, so I began looking for a location. I found a space here, and we set up our bakery,” said Omar.
The Correas are originally from Puerto Rico, and they had noticed few places to buy food from their homeland. They offer a variety of pastries, Cuban sandwiches, expresso, and iced coffee.
According to Omar, the most popular sandwich is the tripleta, which has pork, pastrami, and ham. The bakery also offers churro cheesecake, Nutella bundt cake, and other pastries, which are displayed in a case upon entry.
“Customers would come in and say we could not find a restaurant serving Puerto Rico goodies. The items we sell are just like what we made in our homeland,” said Omar.
El Coqui has attracted a solid customer base. After the ribbon cutting, people lined up to enjoy lunch or buy a pastry. “We want to establish our business and then maybe expand. This is a good location for us,” said Omar.
During the ribbon-cutting, Mayor Tommy Ruzzano praised the Correas for choosing Margate as the location of their new business.
Commissioner Anthony Caggiano said, “We need businesses like this in Margate, and we need them to be successful.”
El Coqui is open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. There is seating and takeout.
