Broward County Animal Shelter Over Capacity, Urges Residents to Help by Adopting or Fostering

Broward County Animal Care is sounding the alarm as its shelter faces a critical overcrowding crisis, with more animals arriving daily than there is space to house them.

To prevent unnecessary euthanasia and give every pet a fair chance at a loving home, the shelter urges residents to adopt, foster, or help spread the word.

In response to the emergency, adoption fees are currently waived. Every pet adopted will go home spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped at no cost to the new owner.

“This is an urgent plea to our residents,” said Zachary Rinkins, Public Information Officer for Broward County Animal Care. “Our shelter is beyond capacity, and we need adopters and foster parents to step up now. By opening your home to a pet, even temporarily, you are helping us make room for the next animal in need.”

Those unable to adopt permanently are encouraged to consider fostering. Fostering is flexible, comes with supplies provided by the shelter, and allows residents to offer a temporary safe haven for pets while opening up space for others in need.

In addition to adopting or fostering, Animal Care is asking residents to share the message with friends and neighbors and on social media to help reach more people who may be able to help.
