Lindsay Giova loves to sing and perform in concerts.
She had the perfect opportunity as a member of Mixtape, one of the bands that performed at Doc Reno’s 8th Annual Bacon, Beer & BBQ Fest at the Margate Sports Complex on August 31.
“This was an amazing event, and it was for a great cause. I loved singing for this audience,” said Giova, a member of MixTape.
The event offered younger musicians an opportunity to perform. Ravi Rodriguez, a member of Plan B, a band that originated from the School of Rock, said he loved performing at the festival and spending the afternoon with fellow musicians.
A community event, the festival brought the Margate community together for music, food trucks, and fellowship. The money raised will go to the My Family Matters Foundation, which supports families with children who are fighting cancer by paying bills not covered by insurance.
Because the sports complex is a covered field, the performance continued even during a thunderstorm. Lucette Romelus, a singer with the Reaxtion Band, the headliner, delivered a high-energy performance and expressed her love for sharing her talent with the crowd. Â
The food truck operators participated in a competition, and some of the winners are poised to advance in the restaurant industry. Brett Portier, the owner of Peppes Hey Babe BBQ, won first place for the best BBQ, featuring a slow-cooked brisket. He is planning to open a restaurant in West Palm Beach. “I feel great about winning and this was exciting,” he said.
The Twisted Hippie won first place for the best food truck. Bailey Mitchell owns the truck, and his mother, Joy Green, and grandmother, Penny Green, accepted the award on his behalf. Hangry Joe’s food truck won first place for the best bacon dish.
The event included local vendors. Carmela Leja, who owns House of Biscotti, sold her products and said she liked the positive vibe.
Doc Reno said the event was successful, although the late afternoon rain created a challenge. He plans to do it again next year.
Commissioner Anthony Caggiano said, “I had fun and I love this event because it raises money to help children with cancer.”
