Nearly two weeks after Riley Weiss of the North Broward prep girls’ basketball set the school record for points in a game with 50, her brother, Ryan, shined in his debut for the boys’ team in their win over Martin County High School on Saturday.
He led the team with 24 points, eight rebounds, and three assists in a 67-54 win. After starting his high school career at George W Hewlett High school in New York, Ryan transferred to NBP for his final year.
“He is a really good shooter, but he also makes really good decisions with the ball, “said Head Coach Casey Wohlleb. “He is able to bet to the basket and has something different pull-ups and is already establishing himself as a really good player this year.
The Eagles, who are coming off a historic season in 2021-22, where they won 27 games and reached the Regional Semifinals, have a new-looking team this year. They had five seniors move on to play college basketball. However, they still managed to move to 1-0 for the fifth time in the past six years.
Junior Enrico Borio added 19 in his first game, while Alex Wigginton, Dylan Hoffman, and Ian Astiazarain combined for 19. Junxi Jang and Ben Daniels also scored. The rest of their teams consist of Ben Bullock, Raul Perez Ruiz, Pavle Djeric, Zack Kaplan, Ju Zhou, and Lucas Secches.
“I think we’re a versatile group,” Wohlleb added. “We don’t have a big guy, but we do have length. I also think we are a smart team, and a lot of different players can make plays. We are learning week-to-week how to use these guys, but I think this group can be really good later in the year.”
NBP heads into their fifth game of the season with a record of 2-2. Ryan is averaging 15.8 points per game. The Eagles picked up a win despite only scoring 11 against Chaminade-Madonna College Preparatory School. He then scored 21 In their most recent game against NSU University.
Their next game will be at home on Tuesday, Dec. 6, at 7:30 p.m. agents Somerset Academy. The Panthers have a record of 1-4 this year, with their only win coming against American Heritage High School.
