Maximus Fuentes {NBP Yearbook}

North Broward Prep’s Maximus Fuentes is officially set to join his sister, Mya Fuentes, in college at Drexel University in Pennsylvania.
While Mia is a star on the tennis team, Maximus blossomed into one of the state’s top basketball recruits. Despite all the uncertainty with COVID and the new transfer rule, Maximus always wondered if he would be able to get this chance.
“It’s an amazing feeling, and I am extremely blessed because I know not many kids can get this opportunity, Fuentes said. “So when I was given the opportunity to play for an amazing program like this, I had to commit right away.”
While Maximus was younger, he was a multi-sport star playing basketball, jiu-jitsu, football, golf, soccer, and bowling. However, he fell in love with the sport and started to take it seriously in fifth grade and played for an AAU team called South Florida Elite.
Maximus, a Coconut Creek native, made the varsity team at NBP as a freshman and, in 101 games, averaged 10.1 points per game. He eclipsed 1,000 career points during his senior season and helped the Eagles reach the Regional Semifinals after going 27-3.

The journey, though, hasn’t always been easy. He credits his dad, Joseph, for sticking with him during all the highs and lows. Maximus worked exceptionally well with Coach Kameron Law when he was home-schooled in middle school. The two worked extremely well together and pushed Maximus to become the best player.
Other coaches he worked with were Casey Wohlleb, Cody Toppert, Akeem Morissaint, Stefan Whittingham, Cody Cohen, Ben Bridges, and trainers John Garris and Tony Falce. Despite all the attention he got, Maximus wanted to find a school great academic school that specializes in Business and entrepreneurship.
“I believe having this real work opportunity during school is going to set me up for whatever I want to do after basketball because I am already going to have three-plus years more experience than everybody else in the field that I am in.”
Maximus established a great relationship with the coaching staff at Drexel. After taking an unofficial visit in the summer, he quickly realized that this was the place for him and would have a chance to be with his sister.
After graduating, he will be joining the Colonial Athletic Conference, playing for a team that made it to the NCAA tournament in 2021. This past season, the Dragons went 15-14 but will have several players graduate, giving Maximus an opportunity.
