Despite falling to Marjory Stoneman Douglas in the District Championship Game, the Monarch High School softball team got their revenge on Friday with a 7-3 win.
This was the third meeting between these two teams, but the first win for the Knights this year. Despite a pair of lightning delays and a 22-hour rain delay, Monarch responded with seven unanswered runs immediately to secure the win as they did in 2019.
“We had to change our strategy a bit,” said Head Coach Kenny Forbes. “We used a push bunt, and it worked in the second inning.”
Isabella Castelli made another great start and earned the win. The senior pitched a complete game and allowed no earned runs. Offensively, Sarah Phipps knocked in two runs in the second and also hit a two-run home run, while Ciera Taylor, Sara Conner and Camryn Piskun had RBIs.
“The first time we played them, I didn’t do that well, and I needed to come up with a different approach,” said Phipps. ” I worked on keeping my hands in front of the ball, and it worked way better than last time.”
With the win, Monarch improved their record to 14-10-1, while the Eagles’ season came to an end with 16 wins in 24 games.
Next, the Knights are set to play on the road when they face Palmetto High School on Tuesday, May 17, at 7 p.m. for a chance to play for a Regional Championship.
This season, the Panthers are 18-10 after defeating Dr. Krop Senior High School 7-1 in their last game. This is the first meeting this season between these two teams.
