Description of Incident:
An-8-year-old girl was injured Sunday night during a backyard fireworks display when she was hit in the head with a piece of concrete.
An adult apparently attempted to use a cinder block to stabilize the firework, which then exploded, sending shrapnel across the yard and hitting the child, who was 30-40 feet away. Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue responded to treat the girl at the scene and then transported her as a trauma alert to Memorial Regional Hospital. Her injuries do not appear to be life threatening.
The Florida State Fire Marshals office is investigating the incident.
On Friday, the Broward Sheriff’s Office Fire Marshal’s Bureau, the BSO Bomb Squad and the Florida State Fire Marshal staged a demonstration to remind people of the dangers of illegal fireworks. Mannequins and melons were used to show the explosive dangers of illegal fireworks and improperly-used legal sparklers and the safety risk that can result in injury, fires and even death.
On a typical Independence Day, more fires are reported in the United States than on any other day. More than 10,000 fireworks-related injuries are also reported each year, with over half of those occurring to children, according to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).
“If you want to see fireworks, leave it to the professionals,” Sheriff Al Lamberti said before the demonstration. “The last thing we want to see is a child burned by a sparkler or lose fingers from fireworks.”
There are no legal consumer fireworks in Florida. Only sparklers are legal for consumer use and can reach temperatures of 2,000 degrees – hot enough to melt gold and cause serious burns or permanent disfigurement.
