Main Fountain at Front Entrance
Our beautiful signature fountain in our main entrance is still not working and has not since the first week in July, coincidentally around the same time that the maintenance of the front entrance was handed back over to the City of Tamarac after the Woodlands spent 20 years maintaining it with our dues. WHOA Patti Fox is currently trying to get it back up and running before the busy golf season. One quote that she has received is extremely high and needs the board approval the other quote received is within her range to approve. The company who has maintained it in the past was just there with her last Wednesday and went over the details of the work with her. We’re hoping that the city and the HOA can find a long-term solution to the frequent breakdowns of the fountain.
Woodlands Boulevard Bike-way
I get asked about the bike-way all the time. Where is it? When will they start? I was a big proponent of the bike-way before I knew that the city had offered to build us one. Walking on the Boulevard is dangerous. Let’s face it, those lanes are narrow and there have been so many near misses of vehicles getting close that I keep a close eye out. Unfortunately, last November one of our neighbors was hit by a car. I firmly believe that a bike-way would provide a safe environment for our walkers, runners, cyclists and golf carts. After the WHOA voted to have the city look into the bike-way for the boulevard back in December, the city did a study and found that the traffic on Woodlands Blvd does not justify having four lanes. After a meeting with the residents on Woodlands Blvd followed by a meeting with all of the residents of the Woodlands, the city decided to move forward with these plans back in the spring based on the positive feedback. Problem is, so far nothing has been done! Not even quotes. WHOA President Patti Fox has informed me that the city will complete this in November. This is not a massive project by any means as there will be no new asphalt applied and only the lanes will be re-marked. I don’t understand the delay in this project. Let’s get this project moving and hopefully we can get this done before someone else gets hurt on the Boulevard.
School Board Member Steps Down
On August 11th, School Board Member David Thomas stepped down from office. Unfortunately, his wife Cindy who has been treated for cancer in the past will need further treatment. Because of the time required by the position, it would leave him unable to be available to give her the type of care that she needs. He will return to teaching at JP Taravella High School where Cindy works as well. I will miss him very much as our School Board member. He leaves our district to our at-large member, Robin Bartleman who will help us out. In our quest to find the right school board member to represent us last year, I have learned so much in the meantime by attending school board meetings or watching them on Beacon TV. David included me in discussions on boundary changes with the department that oversees them as well as learning about “School Choice” and reassignments for our residents.
If you have a question about a school or reassignments, you can contact me. Also, if you have a child that is of school age, please make sure you join our parent group where we list all the various public, private, charter and magnet schools our children attend.
Trash Cans
As I wrote back on August 10th in an article called Woodlands Trash Talk, the City of Tamarac has signed a contract with a new waste company saving the city money. The best part is we will get the heavy-duty trash cans and there will be a variety of sizes to choose from.
Today is the last day you can call Waste Management to request a smaller or larger size than the ones they are providing. These cans will be no charge and are included in the city contract.
Golf Course Purchase
On August 10th, I wrote in the article Teed off about Potential Golf Course Purchase about how the city of Tamarac wants to buy one of Colony West’s golf courses using part of our reserve funds of $3 million dollars.   All while two empty courses that were part of Chait debacle sits empty.  I asked that you please contact our commissioners and tell them you don’t want our money going to buy golf courses.
Please read the article and contact our City Manager, Mayor and Commissioners at:
Mayor Bushnell Pamela.Bushnell@tamarac.org
Vice Mayor Gomez Michelle.Gomez@tamarac.org
Commissioner Swenson Marion.Swenson@tamarac.org
Commissioner Glasser Diane.Glasser@tamarac.org
Commissioner Dressler Harry.Dressler@tamarac.org
City Manager michaelc@tamarac.org
The original date for a vote was on August 24th but it has been changed until further notice. I will keep you informed when that will be.
