Leather lovers in Margate have a new creative hub at Tandy Leather, which celebrated its grand opening on Friday.
Located at 2708 North State Road 7 in Margate, the store held a grand opening celebration with a ribbon cutting attended by city and community leaders.
Tandy Leather is not a typical store where you can make a quick purchase. Here, one learns how to take a piece of leather and make a belt, a purse, a shoe, or artwork. There are classes where one can learn from master leather workers eager to help people learn how to work with leather.
Benton Racine, the manager of Tandy Leather, is excited about the new store. “We offer classes and show people how to create artwork from leather. We offer opportunities for people to learn about leather.”
According to Khan Roberts, a regional manager, the store offers an outlet for people who work with leather as a hobby. The store also offers classes for young people in the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and YMCA. There are about 100 Tandy Leather stores around the nation. The location in Margate had moved from West Palm Beach.
“This is a good location for our store. It is in a central location in Broward,” said Roberts.
Ki Hazard demonstrated to Sophia Caggiano how to make art from leather. “I want to share my knowledge of leather working with the community,” said Hazard.
Commissioner Anthony Caggiano, Sophia’s father and a leather enthusiast, was among the city and community leaders who participated in the ribbon cutting.
“I’ve always loved working with leather and have crafted belts and other items. I’m thrilled that Tandy Leather is now in Margate, and I believe we must support it,” he said.
