Description of Incident:
It was just after 4 a.m. Wednesday when Amos Issac finished stripping another air conditioning unit for its copper tubing and wires. He loaded the valuable metal into a shopping cart and began walking. A few feet away, a Broward Sheriff’s Office sergeant watched from his car.
Issac was arrested and charged with loitering and prowling, grand theft, possession of burglary tools, possession of a shopping cart and theft of copper for the crime at 4007 N.E. 6 Ave. in Oakland Park, one of many countywide that have recently plagued home and business owners who have to replace pricey air conditioners. Once BSO detectives got a look at Issac, they realized he was the culprit in a similar theft at The Stable bar July 14, which was caught on surveillance video. He was charged with another count of grand theft and theft of copper.
Issac and thieves like him typically steal a few hundred dollars worth of copper and leave the business and homeowners on the hook to replace air conditioners worth thousands. They commit their crimes at abandoned homes or closed businesses in the middle of the night.
Anyone with information about metal thieves can report it anonymously to Crime Stoppers of Broward at (954) 493-TIPS (8477) or online at www.browardcrimestoppers.org. Crime Stoppers will pay up to $1,000 for anonymous tips that lead to an arrest.
Media note:Surveillance video is available at www.sheriff.org. Issac’s mug shot is attached to the bottom of this report.
