Iguana in South Florida {Adam Baron}
Iguanas are out of control in Margate, and something needs to be done.
A group of residents from Paradise Gardens Section 4 came to the April 16 commission meeting to ask the city leaders to allow them to kill nuisance iguanas.
John Donohoo, the president of Section 4, which includes 385 homes in a 55-and-over community, said the iguanas have been destroying vegetation and damaging the foundations of homes. They have even found ways to enter homes and live in attics. They also carry Salmonella, which can be deadly, he said.
“We need to be able to remove and kill these iguanas,” he said. “Now, an individual can be arrested for killing an iguana in Margate.”
The problem is that people cannot kill animals in the city under Margate ordinances. They must hire trappers to remove nuisance animals from the city.
Members of the commission agreed that the iguanas must be removed or killed, but they don’t want people, especially teenagers, randomly shooting at them. Mayor Arlene Schwartz said she wants the iguanas to be safely removed.
The commission agreed that the city code regarding the killing of nuisance animals should be changed and asked city management to develop an ordinance to update this code.
