Drones have become more prominent in Margate law enforcement.
The Margate Police Department recently purchased four new drones from Skydio and is using them to help locate missing persons or assist with investigations, according to Major Kevin Stransky, who leads the drone program.
“The drones allow us to get an aerial view of a scene. They are very effective in helping us find individuals who are missing. Instead of using a helicopter, we can use a drone,” said Stransky.
The drones have land-based pilots who direct the drones used in investigations and surveillance operations. The FAA has licensed them after they completed a course known as Part 107.
As drone technology becomes more sophisticated, police departments will use them in more investigations. While Margate does not use drones to the extent that some law enforcement agencies do, Stransky expects the department to use them more in the future.
