Margate Commissioners Caggiano and Simone Awarded for Advocacy in State Legislature

The Florida League of Cities (FLC) has formally recognized Margate City Commissioners Anthony N. Caggiano and Joanne Simone with the 2024 Home Rule Hero Awards for their notable advocacy and commitment during the 2024 Legislative Session.

This acknowledgment highlights their efforts to safeguard and promote the principle of Home Rule – municipalities’ right to govern independently without undue state interference.

Throughout the session, Commissioners Caggiano and Simone actively engaged in the legislative process, advocating for the autonomy of Florida’s municipalities and contributing to the progression of the FLC’s legislative priorities.

Casey Cook, FLC Chief of Legislative Affairs, commended the commissioners for their indispensable advocacy for local decision-making.

“The dedication and effort of these local officials who tirelessly advocated for local decision-making was a difference-maker this legislative session,”

Upon receiving the award, Commissioner Caggiano reflected on the importance of local autonomy, stating, “This recognition not only highlights the importance of preserving local autonomy but also underscores our collective responsibility to empower communities to make decisions that best reflect their unique needs and values.”

Similarly, Commissioner Simone expressed her gratitude and dedication to the cause of Home Rule, reiterating her commitment to serving the community of Margate and upholding the principles that guide her service.

Commissioners Caggiano and Simone have a long history of serving the Margate community. Caggiano took office in 2016 and served as Mayor in 2022, and Simone has served as Commissioner since 2012, then as mayor in 2014.
