A man is accused of ramming an undercover police SUV, fleeing on foot through Margate neighborhoods, swimming across a canal, and being arrested with multiple firearms and cannabis.
According to a Margate Police probable cause affidavit, officers spotted Maurice Eugene Lampkin, 21, of Fort Lauderdale, driving on North State Road 7 on June 24. An officer recognized his vehicle as one that had recently fled a Broward Sheriff’s Office traffic stop and began preparing to stop it.
Police said an unmarked patrol vehicle activated its lights and siren near the 1900 block of North State Road 7. Instead of stopping, investigators say Lampkin shifted his car into reverse and backed into the front of the unmarked police vehicle, damaging its grille and bumper. Another detective then used his vehicle to block him from escaping, according to the report.
Authorities said Lampkin got out of the SUV and ran west, sprinting through neighborhoods, breaking at least one wooden fence, and eventually jumping into a canal. Police said he swam across before climbing a seawall into another backyard on Northwest 19th Street, where an officer drew his gun and ordered him to the ground.
Lampkin surrendered and was taken into custody.
A search of his SUV allegedly uncovered three firearms, including an American Tactical rifle on the driver’s seat, a Sig Sauer P365 handgun on the center console, and a Glock 19X handgun on the rear passenger-side floorboard. Officers also reported finding approximately 9 grams of suspected cannabis inside the vehicle.
Lampkin was arrested and booked into the Broward Main Jail.
