Margi Pattin knows hardship from personal experience. She was a single mother, a survivor of domestic violence, and faced eviction.
During a challenging time, she prayed and promised to return the favor if she could receive divine help.
Pattin’s situation improved, but she never forgot her prayer. Now living in Parkland, she founded two organizations, Legacy Closet and Heroes Hub, to help struggling families and individuals.
On August 10 from 11 to 2 p.m., Legacy Closet will lead an event, Community Giveback, at the Margate Sports Complex at 1695 Banks Road.
According to Pattin, Heroes Hub will provide about 3,000 backpacks and school supplies for children who need them. Toys for Tots will provide high-quality toys, and PetSmart will offer pet supplies. Diapers and feminine hygiene products will also be available.
The Margate Police and Fire Departments will participate and discuss the services they offer families. Other community organizations, including Girl Scouts of America and a swim school, will participate.
Pattin has held back-to-school events for five years in Pompano Beach. This year, she saw a greater need for a backpack giveaway and a late summer event similar to Christmas in the summer in Margate. She said Toys for Tots gave her thousands of toys for a special holiday event for children midyear.
“I know what it is like to be down and out, and I want to help others. I do a lot of work in the homeless community, and I see the struggles that families face. My vision is to do for the greater good of people where we can,” said Pattin.
Legacy Closet is located at 1411 Northwest 31st Avenue in the Budgetel in Pompano Beach, Suite 135. There, Pattin and her volunteer staff offer food and essentials such as diapers, clothing, shoes, snack boxes, and toys for families in need.
They also help families in desperate need find housing. Legacy Closet offers an extensive array of support services. Heroes Hub is a non-profit organization that focuses on helping homeless youth, according to Pattin.
