A laborer drowned while dredging a Margate canal Monday morning, authorities said.

The worker, whose name was not made public, was working as part of a crew dredging the waterway in the 6900 block of Northwest 18th Street when part of the underwater canal bank collapsed around 8:40 a.m., possibly leaving the man trapped under debris.

The authorities said a piece of heavy machinery he was using also fell in the water with him.

Margate Police, Margate Fire Department, and the Broward Sheriff’s Office Dive Team rushed to the canal to try and find the worker, who was later pronounced dead, according to Margate Mayor Antonio Arserio.

“The person is [deceased], and they are still working on recovering the body,” Arserio wrote on his Facebook page after 3 p.m.

During the operation, authorities asked the public to keep away from the search area near Rock Island Road and Northwest 18th Street.

Additional information was not immediately available Monday evening.
