Two individuals will have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in water and wastewater operations through a project-based internship being offered by Margate’s utilities division.
During the February 4 meeting, the commission passed a resolution to authorize the Department of Environmental and Engineering Services (DEES) to establish and fill two internship positions.
The internship is considered a good opportunity for students in engineering, construction, or electronics. It will offer exposure to utility systems, Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) modernization, instrumentation, and AI-based pilot projects. Interns will work with master electricians, technicians, mechanics, and project managers on SCADA systems, instrumentation calibration, utility communication systems, and wastewater treatment process optimization, according to city information.
SCADA systems monitor and control infrastructure processes, and they communicate with and interact with devices and industrial equipment as part of control systems engineering. They are typically deployed to provide electricity, natural gas, wastewater management, water, and other essential utility services.
The interns will assist with utilities projects, including SCADA upgrades, aeration basin design-build, system rehabilitations, and other capital improvements. They will contribute to engineering documentation and support the planning and execution of a pilot AI-based project to improve wastewater treatment plant operations. They will also perform site visits and inspections for utility-related projects and assist with the field execution of water main rehabilitation projects. They will observe and apply safety procedures and gain an understanding of how the DEES department functions in Margate, according to city information.
Candidates should be enrolled in a college or trade school studying utilities operations and maintenance, construction management, engineering, environmental science, or a related field. They should have an Interest in water resources, engineering, municipal utilities, electricity, or instrumentation and controls. The interns will work for up to 14 weeks and be paid $18 per hour. The city has budgeted $20,160 for the program, according to city information.
The internship will be posted this month at https://www.margatefl.com/905/Job-Opportunities.
