A man was found with drugs in Coconut Creek Tuesday after he tossed a handgun into a lake while running from police, authorities said.

According to Coconut Creek Police, Kevin Delgado, 18, of 2240 NW 41st Ave. in Coconut Creek, was acting suspiciously when a patrol officer spotted him on Aug. 2 in the 2800 block of Northwest 42nd Avenue, inside the Tradewinds condominium complex, shortly after 2 a.m.

Delgado ran at first sight of police, got into a white car, and fled the complex, police said.

Officers coordinated with a helicopter from the Broward County Sheriff’s Office to track the car as it traveled out of Coconut Creek into Pompano Beach, then back into Coconut Creek, police said.

The car got into a wreck near the Sawgrass Expressway off State Road 7, according to the department.

After the crash, Delgado threw a handgun into a nearby lake, police said.

He was taken into custody after tossing the gun, which a BSO dive team recovered from the lake, police said.

Delgado was not hurt in the crash.

Officers said Delgado was in possession of 15 bags of marijuana packaged and ready for sale, branded labels for the drugs, and a heat-sealing machine to package them.

Delgado was charged with resisting an officer, loitering or prowling, possessing drug paraphernalia, and possessing marijuana with intent to sell.

He was booked into the Broward County Main Jail and released without bond.
