Coconut Creek resident Jakob Graham was awarded a $1,000 scholarship from Do The Right Thing of Coconut Creek last month for helping save a man’s life in Windmill Park.
Graham, who recently graduated from Monarch High School, is the second of four scholarship winners this year to be recognized by the local Do The Right Thing organization.
The soon-to-be college student alerted first responders to a man having a medical emergency at the park in November 2019, when he was a sophomore.
He is currently enrolled at Broward College for the fall term.
“My husband and I are both really proud of him,” said Jakob’s mother, Chari Graham, after police showed up at her door to surprise her son with a scholarship check. “It’s just mind-blowing that he grew up so fast, and my baby boy is going off to college now.”
She said the money would help pay for some of her son’s tuition and books during his first semester.
Graham said he eventually wants to work in sports marketing, with a focus on social media and working with athletes.
“This is definitely kind of a cool experience,” he said of receiving the award.
