A man who allegedly pulled a firearm on a man pumping gas at a Margate gas station was arrested on assault with a deadly weapon charge.

On February 19, the Margate Police Department received reports of an incident involving a firearm at the Marathon Gas Station located at 6600 West Atlantic Boulevard.

Upon arrival, records show officers got a clearer picture of what transpired by watching surveillance footage that depicted a man, later identified as Guibel Cuevas, 25, of Margate, pulling a firearm on a victim following a verbal confrontation.

According to the police report, the confrontation began when the victim honked at Cuevas for pulling out before him. Cuevas responded by honking back, and the situation escalated when both men arrived at the Marathon gas station.

The victim, while filling his truck, was approached by Cuevas, and a verbal altercation ensued, during which Cuevas allegedly threatened the victim, saying, “I got something for you, old man.”

Fearing for his safety, the victim retreated to his vehicle.

Surveillance footage shows Cuevas subsequently parking his car on the station’s east side, opening his trunk, and placing an object in his front waistband.

Unaware of Cuevas’s actions, the victim entered the gas station to pay.

Upon exiting the store, the victim was confronted by Cuevas, who was now seated in his car. In a threatening gesture, Cuevas allegedly pointed a firearm at the victim and stated, “I’ve got your old ass now,” before driving away, but not before the victim noted a partial license plate number.

According to records, a detective who recognized Cuevas from a prior arrest in 2020 conducted a follow-up investigation. On February 28, the victim positively identified Cuevas from a six-person photographic lineup.

Cuevas was later apprehended by law enforcement in his neighborhood. During the arrest, officers detected a strong odor of suspected cannabis from his vehicle. A search revealed a small amount of cannabis, possible fraudulent checks and debit cards, and a 9mm handgun without a visible serial number.

The handgun found hidden in the trunk matched the description and location of the weapon used in the gas station incident. It contained one round in the chamber and three in a 30-round magazine.

Cuevas, currently on active probation, denied the allegations depicted on surveillance video and claimed by the victim.

He was arrested and transported to the Broward County Main Jail.
