Police: Margate Towing Company Employee Arrested After Violent Beating of Customer, Concealing Evidence

A Margate towing company employee was arrested after police say he violently beat a customer, broke his tooth, damaged his phone, and attempted to conceal evidence by disabling surveillance cameras.

According to a Margate Police Department arrest report, Remington Read, 30, was arrested April 10 in connection with a March 19 incident at Emergency Towing, where investigators say he worked at the time of the altercation.

According to the arrest affidavit, the victim in the case was a customer at the business who became involved in a verbal dispute with Read and other employees. The argument, which took place in front of the business and was witnessed by multiple workers, quickly turned physical.

Detectives say surveillance video shows Read grabbed the victim and began striking him repeatedly. The affidavit states that after an initial scuffle was broken up, the violence resumed. Read allegedly approached the victim again, striking him from behind before joining in a group attack that included punches and kicks while the victim was on the ground.

As a result of the attack, the victim suffered significant injuries, including broken teeth.

Following the altercation, investigators say Read picked up the victim’s iPhone from the ground and brought it inside the business. He allegedly walked into a bathroom, struck the phone against a hard surface, cracking the screen, and eventually returned it.

The investigation further alleges that Read attempted to interfere with law enforcement’s ability to review what happened.

As detectives arrived at the business, Read allegedly instructed another employee to disable the surveillance camera system. When questioned, he later provided a sworn statement claiming the cameras were not functioning at the time of the incident. However, investigators say that the statement was false and contradicted by video evidence they later obtained through a search warrant.

According to the affidavit, additional video shows employees discussing the cameras and suggesting they be turned off again, further supporting allegations of attempted evidence tampering.

Read was released from the Broward County Main Jail after posting a $35,500 bond.
