A Margate man has been charged with animal cruelty for allegedly breaking a puppy’s thighbone and injuring the dog’s eye and ear, court records show.

Alexander Lamoreaux, 23, of Pinewalk Drive North, told the dog’s owner he “spanked” the four-month-old puppy on Jan. 25 after it urinated on the floor and bit him, according to an arrest affidavit filed by Margate Police.

But the dog’s injuries suggested cruelty well beyond a  “spanking,” records show.

When the dog’s female owner brought the five-pound puppy to Boca Village Animal Hospital, veterinarians determined the animal had suffered a thigh bone fracture in his right leg, bruising to his right eye, and scrapes to his right ear, the records show.

“Due to the extent of the injury, surgery is required for repair, and estimated to be $3,000 to $5,000,” police wrote.

The vets contacted police to report animal abuse, the affidavit states.

Lamoreaux told the dog’s owner he saw the dog limping after he struck it.

“When I saw him limping, I was massaging his leg because I know I spanked him hard,” Lamoreaux said, according to police.

Police filed the animal cruelty charge on April 26.

Police said they made numerous attempts to contact Lamoreaux but that his whereabouts were unknown as of the filing.

A criminal summons was issued in the case, and a subpoena was issued for Lamoreaux, who is due in court on July 7, records show.
