Residents living near the old Carolina Golf Club are invited to attend the Margate Planning and Zoning Board meeting on September 11 at 6:30 p.m. at Margate City Hall.
The board will review a request by Rosemurgy Acquisitions for a zoning change from commercial recreation to residential. Rosemurgy wants to redevelop the golf course located at 3011 North Rock Island Road and to build up to 377 townhomes and up to 507 mid-rise multifamily dwelling units.
During past public meetings, residents from the neighborhood have spoken against the project and want the land to remain mostly open space. Allen Kopelman, of Keep Margate Green, said the city’s development review committee, made up of department heads, has rejected the developer’s plans twice.
“These are the professionals, and they have found that the plans do not fit the community. We don’t want big apartment buildings on the old golf course,” said Koplemann.
The Planning and Zoning Board is only a recommending body, so the item will then proceed to the city commission, according to Lisa Huriash, public information officer.
