A Coconut Creek man was arrested Thursday after DNA linked him to a January crime spree, police said.

Desmond Washington, 25, of 4470 N.W. 55th Dr., allegedly committed the crimes on Jan. 30 in the Cypress Lakes neighborhood. There, he burglarized several vehicles and slashed the tires of several cars, according to Coconut Creek Police. Washington also stole a car, which has since been recovered, police said.

At some point, probably while he was slashing tires, Washington cut himself, police said. A crime scene investigator collected that blood evidence, and subsequent DNA testing confirmed it belonged to Washington, according to the police department.

“This goes to show the crooks that our dedicated team of detectives and crime scene investigators never give up and will tenaciously follow the evidence until they’re in handcuffs,” the department said in a Facebook post.

Washington is charged with grand theft auto, four counts of car burglary, fifteen counts of criminal mischief, and three counts of petit theft, records show.

He was booked into the Broward Main Jail and released on a $13,750 bond.
