A burglar who broke into several cars parked outside homes and businesses in Coconut Creek was arrested Wednesday, police said.
Anthony Barothy, 27, a homeless man, is charged with three counts of vehicle burglary and petit larceny for targeting cars in the North Creek area, according to an arrest affidavit.
Beginning Sept. 27, Barothy was seen rummaging through multiple unlocked cars in the Long Pine community, the Lyons Gate neighborhood, and the Lyons Technology Park, according to the Coconut Creek Police Department.
In the first incident, a Ring doorbell camera captured Barothy entering a green 2022 Subaru, from which he stole a small amount of cash, the affidavit states.
In the following two incidents, on Sept. 30 and Oct. 1, surveillance footage showed Barothy trying to enter a gray 2021 Chevrolet Colorado, which turned out to be an unmarked police vehicle, records show.
On Oct. 5, police found Barothy living in a tent in a densely wooded area behind a Publix on Hillsboro Boulevard, where homeless people often sleep, records show. Officers recovered several items Barothy had stolen, police said.
At police headquarters, Barothy told investigators he had intended to steal money from the cars to pay for food and hygiene products, the affidavit states.
Additional charges may be pending in the case, according to the department.
Records show Barothy was being held Saturday at Broward County’s Joseph V. Conte jail facility.
