Broward County is preparing future voters by launching an initiative focused on registering high school students, ensuring their readiness to engage in the democratic process.
To foster civic engagement, the Broward County Supervisor of Elections Office, in collaboration with Broward County Public Schools, has announced its annual High School Voter Registration Drive (HSVRD).
According to a press release, the month-long campaign—set to run through April 30—aims to educate and register high school students while stressing the importance of the democratic process.
Broward has set a goal of registering at least 10,000 students as new voters. Election officials will visit approximately 40 high schools within the county to provide support and resources for the drives organized by the schools.
As a bonus, the school with the most registered students will be honored with an award from the Supervisor of Elections office.
Broward County Supervisor of Elections Joe Scott notes that in 2023, over 7,000 eligible high school students took the step to register to vote, adding that the leading schools in this commendable effort were Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, South Plantation High School, and Northeast High School.
For over 30 years, the High School Voter Registration Drive has been a cornerstone in Broward County’s approach to voter engagement, successfully bringing thousands of young voters into the electoral fold.
Florida law allows students 16 and 17 years old to pre-register and those who are 18 to register to vote, provided they meet the necessary criteria of being U.S. citizens and not having any felony convictions without rights restoration.
