Margate Police arrested an automotive dealer on Monday for failing to report thousands of dollars in sales tax he collected from car sales, court records show.

William Sejour, 40, of Pompano Beach, is charged with one count of theft of state funds, a felony.

According to investigators with the Florida Department of Revenue, Sejour was owner and president of Exclusive Car Auto Sales, a now-defunct auto dealership in Pompano Beach.

Between June 2017 and December 2021, Sejour collected but failed to report $5,497.86 in sales tax to the state, despite collecting nearly $5,800 in sales tax from customers, according to court records filed by the Department of Revenue.

The agency contacted Sejour multiple times to arrange for him to pay the taxes and avoid arrest. He told them several times that he would pay the debt but never did, records show.

Investigators said that Sejour’s business bank accounts showed $132,432 in net deposits during the period that he failed to report and pay sales taxes, proving he had enough money to pay the amount owed.

A judge issued a warrant for Sejour’s arrest in May.

Margate Police officers pulled Sejour over on Monday for driving a white Chevrolet pickup truck with an expired license plate, police said. When records showed the open warrant, he was arrested on the tax theft charge and booked into the Broward Main Jail.

Bond information for Sejour’s case was not available Thursday.
