Margate Celebrates Consuelo Thornton’s 106th Birthday

For Consuelo Thornton, family always came first. Her daughter, Connie Thornton, remembers Consuelo’s commitment to her husband, children, and grandchildren.

Senior Vista Adult Day Care celebrated Consuelo’s 106th birthday with a party that included cake and a fun social event for everyone.

Margate Vice Mayor Anthony Caggiano and Commissioner Arlene Schwartz were on-site and presented her with a commendation for reaching age 106.

“She is very social and active and has many friends. She has had many life experiences and always cared about her family,” said Connie.

“I am honored to recognize someone who has lived to 106. She has seen changes from the coming of automobiles to computers. She lived through World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and other major historical events. She has so many memories,” said Schwartz.

Born in 1920 in Retalhuleu, Guatemala, Consuelo had two sisters whom she outlived. During World War II, Consuelo contributed to the war effort by sewing military uniforms. While living in Guatemala, she met Raymond Thornton, a member of the U.S. Army. After World War II, they married in Guatemala and eventually moved to the United States. According to Connie, they traveled and lived in various places.

Consuelo enjoyed raising two daughters, Connie and Shirley, and a son, Raymond. She lost Shirley at age 44 to cancer and her husband at age 79. She has six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. According to Connie, she has enjoyed traveling, spending time with family, and a good party.
